"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things, there is no law." Galatians 5:22-23
Message from Fr. Michael Becker -
Mystics also speak of the Holy Spirit as light, even the “light of life” (John 8:12). When one is awakened to the presence of the Holy Spirit within, there is illumination that occurs, primarily before the eyes of the mind. I remember a former parishioner named Elizabeth sharing with me that after being prayed with at roughly age forty, for the first time she felt the presence of the Holy Spirit inside of her and her eyelids began to flutter. The eyelid phenomenon happens not to all but to some people, when in prayer their mind is gazing upon the interior light of the Holy Spirit. Since that key moment in her life, Elizabeth experiences Divine intimacy every day.
Have you ever questioned, “What are the gifts which the Holy Spirit has given to me?” Some say that the Holy Spirit has given them the gift of wisdom, others an office of teaching or administration, still others speak in tongues or prophesy, while yet others possess a charism of hospitality, intercessory prayer, or counsel. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are manifold.
Jesus promises to those who will drink, a “spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14), which He later states will flow out of one’s “belly,” as “rivers of living water” (John 7:38). This is the Holy Spirit alive in the soul! I never felt that presence until I was twenty-one years old and was prayed with by two young men my age who were on fire for the love of God. It was the watershed moment of my spiritual life.
