The office receives these emails often and we receive calls regularly regarding parishioners receiving these emails and texts, so you are not alone. Hackers are getting smarter every day. Some target parishes to try to make an email or text look like it was sent by clergy and staff. They get our email and cell phone information from our website, online bulletin, advertisers, and other sources. GOOD TO KNOW: Priests or staff will NEVER ask you for "a favor" to send gift cards, to respond urgently and discreetly, or to only discuss matters via email or text. CHECK THE EMAIL ADDRESS OR PHONE NUMBER: A good indicator is the sender's email or phone number. Hackers create emails similar to our parish staff’s emails. However, if you hover over the email or name, usually the email is coming from a different source. Most often there is something different. Please note, that capital or lowercase letters are irrelevant in email addresses. SJA staff emails end in @ssjacs.org or @sacsschools.org. BEST THING TO DO: Send them to your junk, block the sender, or at least delete those emails or texts! DO NOT RESPOND! Use your best judgment about whether what is being asked is really how any clergy or staff would contact you regarding the matter. Do not let them trick you into doing something you do not feel is right! If you still have any questions or suspicions about the legitimacy of an email or text, please call the office at 952-445-1319 or email [email protected]. |
